There is a curious and unusual postcard of this well on eBay. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334888181243. The price of £12 is somewhat north of what I'd be prepared to pay for it however.

If this well was in The Well House or in the Royal Clarence Hotel it is now lost since a disastrous fire a few years ago.... I was sad to learn about this - as an avid well visitor - even more so as I grew up in E eter and used to be taken to the Royal Clarence on special occasions....( it was really posh!) Less salubrious was The Well House - on the many occasions I drank there the dizzying array of good ale blinded me to the meaning of the name of the hostelry....!! At least now the skelaton may rest in peace....

This is surely the well in the basement of the Well House Tavern, 16-17 Cathedral Close. There is a skeleton in an ancient display case built into the wall nearby. You can feel the vibrations of the water if you sit in the front of the tavern overhead.

The Well House Tavern is in Cathedral Close, facing the cathedral. Sit in the front of the tavern and feel the vibrations.

Does anyone have more info on this? Is the spring inside/underneath St. Martin's church?

Hi Anonymous - In answer to your question about St Martin's Well:
A book by Terry Faull, 'Secrets of the Hidden Source', lists most wells in Devon and this is what he says:
St Martin's Well: located at the edge of Cathedral Close; this was claimed to be a Roman Well (possibly located in the cellars of the Royal Clarence Hotel)."

If you live locally try asking at the Hotel, or else pop in to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Queen Street. There's a good Roman period display there.
Or check out the Exeter city website.
