Pabell Llywarch Hen
Pabell Llywarch Hen submitted by TimPrevett : This is classed as a type 4 site, destroyed or unrecognisable. The Burl gazetteer entry has it as being destroyed pre-1746 (credit to Maggie & Keith @ Megalithics for that info). Unsurprisingly, yes, nothing was to be seen. Somewhere on the right, the south east side of the A494 at Llanfor near Bala, there was once a stone circle. Not any more. The property seen is called "Carreg y Big" - perhap... "Carreg y Big" could be misleading, as 'Big' will possibly actually not mean 'big' as suggested, but is probably derived from the Welsh 'pig' meaning 'point' (mutated from pig to big after the y - honest!).

The delightful ONS examples of Welsh in place names includes the following item:
"pig, nf = point. eg, Pig y Baw SN0140 Nant-y-big SH3025"

I can't find any reference to this circle, except that a dwelling not far west of GR is called "Carreg y Big" - meaning the Big Stone. No mention of anything megalithic on Coflein.

Re: Pabell Llywarch Hen by Anonymous on Thursday, 19 October 2006
I have a rather odd reference to make to this site. It was claimed that Humphrey Jones "died on June 23rd 1834 near 'Pabell Llywarch Hen' close to Lanfair, about 2 miles from Bala Lake. His favorite bard was Llywarch Hen." Humphrey Jones is the subject of 'A Fisherman's Tale' in Rev W J Davies A History of the Parish of Llandyssul (Cardiganshire). I had thought this was a misprint for Llanfair, near Llandyssul Village and was ready to dismiss it since I could not find any evidence of his burial there or his transportation to New South Wales. Now, I will have to reconsider his tale.
