Coed Gibraltar
Coed Gibraltar submitted by geoffstickland : The Fort viewed from the North from across the river Usk which would have afforded a useful defensive dimension. (Vote or comment on this photo)
An Iron Age Hiil fort in a bend of the River Usk. Approximately 100 yards across and 100' high. Damaged by the abandonded construction of a railway line in the 19th. Century. The roughly pear-shaped hill is now covered in juvenile, commercial forestry.

Zoom in from 1:25000 on OS mapping and this location is described as "Quarry (dis)" and the earthworks symbols are absent. Is this site recorded elsewhere as a fort?

An aerial view shows what seem to be other partially ploughed out earthworks / embankments running from SW to NE as if to separate a promontory fort from land behind it.

Coflein (415952) regards it as a Promontary Fort, broadly in line with what I wrote. The aborted railway line that I think was originally intended to go North to Llangammarch may have been responsible for quarrying work? There is talk of an embankment and a tunnel?
