Anne T visited on 18th May 2017 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Cross Well, Linlithgow: From the Knock Modern Stone Circle, we set off towards the Gogar Stone. Passing through Linlithgow (we plan on going to see the Palace and nearby Hopetoun House) another day. There was no market today, so I persuaded my friend to quickly stop which I got a proper photograph of the well! (Note the friend's car hiding behind the structure!)

Anne T visited on 13th May 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Cross Well, Linlithgow: This was our last stop on this rainy day, and we arrived to find a small market around the well, along with an event happening at the Burgh Halls immediately behind it. Couldn’t really get close to the well itself until later in the afternoon, as there were lots of stallholders, children and dogs. Truly a centre point for the town. No water in the well today – the spout and basin were completely dry. I confess I was disappointed to find such a modern structure - I'd expected something a lot older and less ornate. We tried to find the Dogwell, walking up Dog Well Wynd as far as the railway line, but nothing. After photographing the well as best I could, we wandered around the loch, then back round via St. Michael’s church, with its internal walls marked by musket balls and sword sharpening marks from Cromwell’s soldiers.

Cross Well (Linlithgow)
Cross Well (Linlithgow) submitted by KiwiBetsy : Site in West Lothian The present Cross Well stands in the High street of Linlithgow just outside the lane that leads to Linlithgow Palace. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well / Spring in West Lothian

Described on Canmore ID 49178, which tells us this well is "remarkable for the richness and intricacy of the carving, it excites the envy of the citizens of Edinburgh for the copiousness of its supply of water. The design was an accurate replica of its crumbling 1628 predecessor by John Ritchie. Outstandingly flamboyant crown-well sitting upon an octagonal plinth, grouped columns at each corner. Above there is a riot of strapwork, punctuated by amazing squashed stiff-flower finials sitting upon a plinth decorated with animal heads and other carvings. Cusped flying buttresses lead to the second tower in which the corners are marked instead by statues on strapwork plinths: cusped flying buttresses then lead to a domed top decorated with heads, surmounted by the Royal Unicorn. Carved by Robert Gray, a one-handed stonemason, who worked with the mallet strapped to his left stump. Restored by Bob Heath Architect, 1997. Figures from the original well were recently rediscovered and, following conservation, are now on display in the Annet. Adjacent is a contemporary pedestal with a gargoyle with the town's arms and dates, and an inscribed slab by Vincent Butler RSA commemorating the town's 600th anniversary as a royal burgh."

Cross Well (Linlithgow)
Cross Well (Linlithgow) submitted by KiwiBetsy : Site in West Lothian The present structure was built in 1807 and is an imitation of the previous Cross Well that was built in 1660. The 1660 version in turn replaced an earlier structure which was destroyed by Cromwell's army. I believe, but unfortunately have been unable to confirm, that one of those earlier Cross Wells was removed to the courtyard of Linlithgow Palace. If that is correc... In trying to find out more about this well, I came across this snippet on the internet from West Lothian Council Cross Well Restoration, which says: "The Linlithgow Cross Well is an important heritage feature of the town but has suffered from years of neglect and damage. The original Cross Well at the front of the Burgh Halls on the Linlithgow High Street was first used in 1535 as a dipping well, providing the town water supply. The structure was damaged during the occupation of Linlithgow by Cromwell's troops and subsequently repaired after the 1660 restoration of Charles II. Carved figures form the 19th Century well-head are exhibited at the Linlithgow Story Museum in Annet House …… The time capsule proposed to be placed beneath is a great sentimental idea for the town which will preserve artefacts for many years to come".

I had hoped to find an earlier reference to the well, taking it back in time even further as it was the main water supply for the town, but not yet
