I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 31st Oct 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Tullibole Church Ruins with hogback in five pieces: Our first stop of the day, and as Andrew told me this was a site where 11 witches were tried, condemned and burned, a site I thought would be a good, spooky, start to the Halloween. But, this is essentially a field with a few gravestones sticking out of it, and it turned out the trials had taken place at nearby Tullibole Castle. The remains of the church are there, on the south side buried deep in the grass and turf, but more visible on the northern side, where several courses of stones stick up out of the ground. There is a display board next to a large monument surrounded by a metal railing and tall conifers, but we had difficulty orientating ourselves to the photos, eventually picking up the display board (which was propped up against the railings, and taking it over to the chest tombs). We did find one part of the hogback, and possibly a second, but the grass tussocks were so high, we were unable to find any more pieces. As the information sheets were covered in plastic, but the rain was seeping through, and they are likely to become even more worn and stained, I photographed a couple of them and typed them up for future reference.

Tullibole
Tullibole submitted by Anne T : The larger piece of hogback (circled by the red oval) we were able to identify from the plan could really have been any old stone. The fact it had a 'hump' on top gave it a different shape to the other grave markers around it, and it was also at a different orientation. Not really convinced, but we tried very hard to find all five pieces. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Remains of church and burial ground with hogback in 5 pieces in Fife

The church and its burial ground is recorded as Canmore ID 26514, whilst the hogback is recorded as Canmore ID 77379, Tullibole 2. The 1991 entry reads: "Related to earlier hogback monuments, this recumbent coped monument is carved with the remains of three rows of tegulae, but the ancient reuse of the monument has shaved off the lower part of the slab. Date: eleventh or twelfth century."

Anther cross slab, recorded as Tullibole 1, Canmore ID 26515, is on display on the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. For a photograph of this stone with interlaced work, men, and animals see Exhibit X.IB 99.

The church today is a ruin, largely defined by earthern banks (except for a few courses of stone more visible on its northern side), and the hogback recorded as having been cut into five pieces to try and form Christian memorials. The graveyard, during the time of our visit, was calf high in grass, and all but a few of the chest tombs fallen down. However, a plan of the church and graveyard are propped up on a wooden board near the large monument at the south east end of the churchyard (look for the giant pillar surrounded by a metal railing and tall trees), and this shows where to look for the hogback fragments.

Given the standard of carving in the Tullibole 1 cross slab, we were expecting the hogback to be more than just a lump of stone almost submerged in the ground. We did think we found two of the pieces; whilst we were not entirely convinced, they were at the spot indicated on the plan.

At the nearby Tullibole Castle, eleven witches were tried, convicted, strangled then burned in 1662. The Castle now has a Witches' Maze, created at the central point for the trials. An appropriate visit for Halloween, the day we visited this now ruinuous church.

Tullibole
Tullibole submitted by Anne T : We thought this might have been the second of the five fragments of hogback, but because all the stones were so tumbled, it was really difficult to tell. However, it was at the right location on the plan left at the church yard. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Tullibole
Tullibole submitted by Anne T : The paper sheets covered by plastic on the information board, propped up by the large memorial surrounded by iron railings, were sodden with rain. I photographed the plan for future visitors in case it became illegible in the near future. This shows where to find the hogback pieces, but beware, we only found what we thought were two pieces, deeply buried under grassy tussocks. (Vote or comment on this photo)
