Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Powys

Ffynnon Cwm Ewyn lies on isolated Welsh moorland high above St Melangell’s Church at Pennant Melangell.

We spotted this well on a map in the excellent museum set up in the tower of this most delightful church and with directions from a local, crossed the stream and followed it down to a farmhouse to cut through their yard to gain access to a forestry track. A long, hard climb saw us first loose the trees on our right and, as promised, just before they also vanished on our left, there was the well, over a fence and almost obscured by a half fallen conifer.

The well, a rectangular, stone lined basin clad in moss and ferns still waited with crystal clear water for passers by just as it had since monks, pilgrims and farmers passed that way, maybe enroute to St Melangell’s below, further on to St Winifrede's at Holywell or simply to market.

In May 2003 we did our best to remove the conifer and let the sun reach in. We stood and thought of those visitors of long ago and hoped that the farmer wouldn’t object to present day ones.

The Clwyd-Powis Archaeologiocal Trust say that very little is known of the well but that it is “reputed to be a holy or medicinal well”.

St.Melangell's story - early celtic saint.
Saint Melangell in mid Wales acquired the story of saving the life of a hare, the emblem of the goddess Eostre. Melangell shrine is at the head of a remote valley in the Berwyn Valley, she was a 6th century Irish chieftains daughter, a descendent of the self styled roman emperor Magnus Maximus. She had fled to this valley to escape a planned marriage, and rock steps cut in the valley side lead to her "bed", the ledge on which she slept before her chapel was built a quarter of a mile away.
The story goes that in 604, a local chieftan was out hare coursing, he was the King of Powys, and called Brochwel.. His hounds found a hare and chased it into a thicket where Melangell was praying, the hare hid in the folds of her cloak and the hounds fled howling. The huntsman called on his horn to his dogs but the little hare refused to move. Melangell told the story to Brochwel, who was so impressed that he gave her the valley and she established a community of nuns.
The church yard is surrounded by yews, the oldest dating perhaps to 400 bc, it gives the appearance of a druidic grove. Melangell's grave is beneath a rock in the floor of the tiny 12th century apse of her chapel, and the huntsman and his hound chase a hare along the 15th century rood-screen.
Now, whether Melangell represents the celtic goddess Eostre, is of course a matter of legend and debate, but hares were sacred in celtic times, and her story of protecting a hare has a ring of truth about it...
