Stone Circle in Cumbria

For information see Pastscape Monument No. 8753, an extract of which reads: "Bronze Age in date and consisting of 12 stones, it was buried in 1820. The site was excavated and restored in 1949 when a cairn was also found in the centre of the circle; it covered a possible cremation with a jet or lignite ring."

They add that "An outlier was found 70' north of an unburied stone, whilst a large broken boulder 200 yds south-west of the circle, and 4 partly buried boulders to the south-east, may have been associated with it. A Great Langdale Late-Neolithic stone-axe was found near stone 4. An oval stone cairn 22' x 15' and 2' - 2.5' high was situated in the circle centre .... ten stones in a circle survive of a fairly uniform height c1.3m height."

Now it sits overgrown by weeds with the site of the central cairn covered in cow muck from where a cattle feeder has stood, on the seaward side masses of tractor tracks run into the circle & several of the stones seem to have recent da... eeveyb writes: We drove many miles to find this Circle of Stones , over the usual fences - farmers field - up to our ankles in glorious mud!! Our hearts dropped heavily when we reached our goal...in the centre of the circle was a rusty old hay cart, and the stones were obviously being used as rubbing posts . I supose the farmer just thinks that the Stones are taking up his agricultural land... and doesn't give a toss !! but there is no need for such disrespect..wouldn't you have thought the HERITAGE PEOPLE would take more of an interest to protect sites from neglect??
