Stone Circle in the process of restoration. The circle was rediscovered in a meadow at Wilton, near Egremont by landowners Philip and Lyndsey Johnson. And according to Dr Terence Meaden, a research archaeologist from Oxford University, the stones could be over 4,000 years old.

The formation was unearthed when the Johnsons began researching the history of their house. They came across an 18th century map with a drawing of the old stone circle in a field close to their home. It was marked “Druids Temple”.

Further investigation showed the stones were probably moved by a farmer around 1800. The stones were found in a nearby hedge.

The discovery attracted the attention of Professor Meaden and Paul Daw, who have been on the scene to aid in the reconstruction.

More, with photos at Whitehaven News

Terence Meaden adds: It is important to note that NO ACCESS IS ALLOWED YET. We need to ensure first that a major stone, standing nearly vertical, will not topple. Therefore I am not giving permission yet to anyone unless accompanied by me or Paul or the landowners.

We intend a welcome sign to go up eventually. However enquirers should be patient for a few months more.

Terence has posted a gallery of the reconstruction on Facebook which he encourages people to visit for updates.

This stone circle is features on Lake District Walks (Yewcroft Stone Circle) saying it in the process of restoration.

The latest entries on the Facebook page are from August 2016, so I'm not sure if the monument is yet open to the public.

(User Info | Send a Message)
Beccy Smith writes: Hi, I own land upon which a recently resurrected Neolithic stone circle stands. I am selling this land and wondered if anyone was interested in buying it? I have an offer from a non profit stone circle related organisation which partially meets the price and they are happy to share ownership with interested parties to ensure preservation of this site.

Please contact me, Beccy Smith on beccy@holisticequine.co.uk , tel: 01946 825913.
The site is Yewcroft Stone Circle, Wilton, Egremont, Cumbria, CA222PJ

Many thanks!

Just adding some more explanation from Terence's Facebook page before they 'fall' off the bottom:

August 31st: I'm off excavating tomorrow to Northern England where a likely stone-circle site will have its original stone holes searched for by test excavation. The hope is to match features pressed into the ground at stone-hole bottoms with the bases of actual megaliths that were pulled away two centuries ago.

Destruction was sometime between 1777 (when a local plan marked the spot of the stone circle) and 1814 (inferred by its absence on a plan of 1814).

Sept 12th: Next week I'll begin reporting on the love and labour that went into raising this noble edifice from the wreckage that lay concealed in the overgrown hedge and bank for around two centuries. Several megaliths had, sadly, been split in two.

Sept 13th: We dug seven test pits each 1m by 1m down to the old ground surface, and started an eighth. MSSR and MWSR settings appeared as possibilities. There is possible evidence for stone removal from two of them.

Sept 27th: Re-establishing a destroyed prehistoric stone circle using the original megaliths was such a wonderful experience. Many thanks to land owners Phil and Lyndsey, daughter Gemma and Phil's brother Andrew, stone-circle enthusiast Paul Daw, and the several villagers who came to help.

Terence Meaden writes: Here is the correct NGR - 043 106, or perhaps nearer to 0431 1065

We want to open it to all comers---but NOT YET.

NO ACCESS ALLOWED YET.
Enquirers should be patient for a few months more.

Some sentences need modification [Made following assurances - Ed]: It is NOT a speculative site. It is not a possible stone circle. IT IS A PREHISTORIC STONE CIRCLE in course of restoration. We have old maps to prove it, and we have all the stones to prove it.

Much more restoration work is planned.

Many stones had been split in two (by drilling) around two centuries ago. Neolithic/Bronze Age flints were recovered from stone holes.

ODE TO A LOST STONE CIRCLE — RESTORED

Inside this field we stood alone,

—for … missing was a ring of stone—

A peaceful place where stones sublime

Were ravaged, and the flow of Time

Was halted --- till the day arrived

When wise and proper sense revived

The love and labour that realigned

The ancient stones. It brings to mind

That survey proved how shrewd design

Did make their granite beauty shine:

This temple to the Rising Sun

And Mother Earth, the task now done.

Fascinating story... well done those people.
A great pity JackME isn't still alive as he'd have loved to visit this site, not far from where he lived at Whicham.

Looking at the picture of the stones in the hedge reminded me of the field where the Merry Maidens stand.
Its hedges are packed with 'suspicious' stones!
When I dowsed there a few years ago, I picked up on two other circles either side of the current stones.
Quote:
"Friday, 21 December 2007
"I believe that the Merry Maidens circle was once the central one of three that ran NE-SW down the sloping ground. I've so often subconsciously thought of the Merry Maidens in a plural sense and talked about 'them', rather than 'it', that I decided to dowse there last May." [Check out that site page on Meg Portal for more.]

On a visit with my dowser friend Jackie in 2012, she checked and also found these missing circles.
I photographed her in action for my records.
If we were correct, wouldn't that be a great thrill to see them re-erected?

Meanwhile congratulations to this team for an excellent job done. They must be very proud of themselves.
