The Mountain Centre can be seen, a couple of hundred yards away in the trees, just to the left of the top of the stones. This is the venue for this years Megalithic Portal event. Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1 submitted by Johnny : Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1, Powys (SN 976 265): So who says the camera never lies?! The same stone with my (then five year old) son to give an idea of (lack of) scale! The stone is in reality just 1m high.

Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1
Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1 submitted by SandyG : The stone is set into a low bank. A prehistoric date therefore seems unlikely. View from east (13th July 2014).

Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1
Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1 submitted by SandyG : The stone stands at the meeting point of four tracks on the edge of an historic field system. An historic origin seems more likely. View from north west (13th July 2014).

Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1
Mynydd Illtud Standing Stone 1 submitted by SandyG : The stone stands at a point where four historic tracks meet. This position combined with its small size suggests that this stone is more likely to be an historic waymarker. View from south east (13th July 2014).

Megalithic Portal Ancient Site Hunt in the Brecon Beacons by Andy B on Sunday, 16 May 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)
Part of the Festival of British Archaeology
Date: 31st July 2010
From: 9.30am
To: 5.30pm

Use the Megalithic Portal to discover prehistoric sites near you, and visit some wonderful locations near Brecon. Talks, displays and demonstrations throughout the day.

Megalithic Portal Ancient Site Hunt in the Brecon Beacons
The Megalithic Portal is your doorway to sites of ancient interest all over the UK and worldwide. It gives access to information about all types of ancient locations, with helpful details about their condition and access, as well as giving you a chance to contribute your own photos and information.

We want to encourage individuals and families to visit, appreciate and photograph many of the sites we have listed but that are missing images or other details.

Bring along your photos and information to help us fill out our database. We will be based at the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre all day with maps and lists of interesting sites to find and report back on – we also hope to have PCs and Wi-Fi access so that you can use and upload your photos straight to the Portal!

Depending on access, it may also be possible to visit and photograph some of the fascinating ancient sites on the nearby MOD training area, or perhaps those along the Epynt Way.

The Mountain Centre not only has wonderful views to Pen y Fan, it is well placed to visit many local hillforts, standing stones and other sites of interest - some of which can be easily reached on foot from the Centre itself.

Full itinerary of the day and further updates to be posted. If you cannot get to Brecon you can still get involved by going online and checking your own local sites by postcode or grid reference.
