I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 25th Jun 2021 - their rating: Cond: 2 Access: 4 Crunzierton Wood Scooped Settlement: I found the 'scramble' up the steep, leaf covered slope to reach the settlement a little bit of a challenge, and rather than slide back down, we came back down on what had been a forestry track (now ruined by recent harvesting) on the north eastern side of the settlement. What a pleasant part of the world, very rural, with what appeared to be mixed forestry rather than just pine. Easier to see the outline of the settlement with the naked eye rather than try and capture it with the camera. Would love to come back when the undergrowth has died back.

Crunzierton Wood Scooped Settlement submitted by Anne T : Standing in the middle of the southern bank of this settlement, looking north/north east across the sub-circular scoop. To the middle/left of the photo, the banks (which can more easily be seen with the naked eye) on the north western side of the scoop can be made out by the change in vegetation and the rise in ground level. Ancient Village or Settlement in Dumfries and Galloway

Canmore ID 66409 in 1991 recorded this Middle Iron Age scooped settlement as being "situated on the SE flank of Crunzierton Hill and lies within a forestry clearing. Sub-circular on plan, it measures 28m from E to W by 27.5m transversely within a grass-covered stony bank which measures up to 4.2m in thickness and up to 1m in height. The position of the entrance is not known". Within the settlement is the remains of a hut circle, although this was not visible amidst the tall bracken and nettles present at the time of our visit.

The outline of the settlement was much easier to see with the naked eye rather than trying to capture it on the camera, as the outer banks could be picked out.

We parked at the side of a forestry track, recently used for cutting trees, at approx. NY 06323 93777, but because of all the tree debris, we walked back to NY 06320 93727 and climbed up a dry, but steep, slope.

There are a number of other settlements in the area, including one just to the south (which looked as if it is now in a private garden), and a larger settlement at Mollin at NY 0542 9360.

With so many other other archaeological features in this area, I would love to go back and explore more, but will need strong walking boots for the heavily wooded/recently harvested areas.

Crunzierton Wood Scooped Settlement
Crunzierton Wood Scooped Settlement submitted by Anne T : Standing just below, and outside of, the northern part of the scooped settlement. The outer banks from this angle are quite impressively high. Inside the scoop, we noticed we couldn't feel the breeze, so the tall banks must have protected the inhabitants nicely in inclement weather, given the banks would have been much taller.
