Holy Well in Moray

In 1905 the OS recorded that the well had the property of healing long ascribed to it but it has no mineral properties. It is was extensively used then as the only real fresh water in the neighbourhood.

According to Joyce Miller's book 'Myth and Magic' published by Goblinshead, 2000, "St Ethan, Aethan or Eternnanus was a disciple of St Columba, and founded several churches on the eastern side of Scotland." So he was obviously a 6th Century saint who had a local cultus at Burghead. There was apparently another holy well of this saint, "although this is apparently now overgrown and disused", says Miller.

St Aethan''s Well was reopened to the public yesterday (11th February 2014) is in farmland having been filled in by the farmer to prevent his cows falling into it. It was rediscovered by the Burghead Headland Trust last year and has now been furnished with a cup on a chain for the public to drink from and two public benches have been added for the public''s convenience.

The location of the real St Aethan''s Well is here:

57*47''08.48"N and 3*28''46.39"W approximately
