Atapuerca Dolmens in danger by Andy B on Thursday, 02 November 2006
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Mayor of Atapuerca writes: Having notice of your important work at the Megalithic Portal to show, protect and research about the Megalithic monuments in the world, I would like to express my sincere acknowledgement for this work, and I would like to be at your disposition, as the Mayor of Atapuerca, in any need from our municipal corporation.

The purpose of this letter is to give you some information, and ask for your help if possible, about a big threat to the future of the Atapuerca Dolmen that you know well.

The menace is the following, Atapuerca is a small town (200 inhabitants) situated at the North of the Castilla y Leon community. There are important remains of our prehistoric Patrimony as you may know the localities of Atapuerca, declared UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.

Some years earlier the Way of Saint James or Jacques of Compostela (Camino de Santiago in spanish), where Atapuerca plays an important role, was declared the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in October 1987 and inscribed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1993. The Camino de Santiago runs through the middle of our town. Moreover there are three Dolmens and a Menhir.

In this moment there is a project of a highway between Logroño and Burgos (the main city of the Province of Burgos) that will run at only 50meters of the three Dolmens and around 75m of the Menhir. This would damage the megalithic monuments and, especially sad, it will annulated the valuable scenery in which they are.

The project will be exposed in public information the next 30 days (November). This period is important because every public or private persons or Institutions may make representation against or in favour of such a project.

We ask you, if possible to write a letter of allegations against the highway project that will disturb the scenario of the Megalithic and Pre-Megalithic landscape of the Atapuerca surrounding area.
We will appreciate any comment about this letter and any help and advice from you in similar cases will be welcome.

With my best regards and congratulations again for your work,

Fernando Gómez Aguado
Alcalde-Presidente de Atapuerca (Mayor of Atapuerca)
