Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Powys

Llanerfyl village is 12 miles west of Welshpool close to the A458. The church of St Erfyl houses a Romano-British inscribed gravestone with an inscription in memory of Rustica.

The memorial stone used to stand in the churchyard but was moved into the church for preservation. It dates from the 5th-6th century CE and the inscription in Latin recalls: HIC IN TUMULO IACIT ROSTEECE FILIA PATERNINI ANI XIII IN PACE and when translated reads 'Here in the tomb lies Rustica daughter of Paterninus, Aged 13 In peace'. Some fragments of decorated wood are apparently part of St Erfyl's shrine.

The first church was founded here in the 6th century CE by St Erfyl, daughter of St Padern and cousin of St Cadfan. About 400 yards west of the church beside a small stone and beneath an ancient yew tree are the remains of the saint's holy well. This was frequented by young people who drank sugared water on festival days such as Whit Sunday, Trinity Sunday and Easter Mondays. Baptism also took place at the well.

A photo of this stone is available with more information on Coflein NPRN 154091. The Journal of Antiquities also features an entry for this site - scroll down to the bottom of their page for Some Inscribed Stones in Wales.

I'm not aware we ever had a photo for this stone. See the text above "A photo of this stone is available with more information on Coflein." which has a link
