Holy Well in Mid Glamorgan

Holy well with nearby rock carvings. The carvings are speculated to be of Mediaeval or post Medieval in date but could also be of Celtic origin.

Tarren Deusant
Tarren Deusant submitted by thebeer : A strange natural stone feature found in a rock face about 10 feet above the ground in a woodland near Castellau (Llantrisant, Mid Glamorgan). The alter stone is surrounded by odd facial carvings, which may be later additions. This pagan (druid) site is said to date from around the 9th century and was first mentioned in print in 1696 by Edward Lhhuyd, the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. ... [Thanks, that's now up-dated]. Just to advise that this site is actually in Mid Glamorgan, rather than South Glam.

Petrosomataglyphs or the shortened term being petroglyphs. Deusant is the Welsh word for "two" - two figures or two heads. I understand that another four heads were carved sometime after 1697. The figures or figure depicted seems to be standing beside a thin cross. This could, in fact, depict two saints. The significance of a spring/holy well here is all important.

Isn't a petrosomatoglyph specifically a petroglyph in the image of a human or animal imprint? Like the footprint of an angel, or the hoof of a magic cow?
(So a man-made petrosomatoglyph is always a petroglyph, but a petroglyph is not always a petrosomatoglyph?)

Correct bat400. A bit confusing but that's about the top and bottom of it, so to speak. Human heads and feet, but sometimes a body too. As in the case of Tarren Deusant.

Hi - quote: 'Deusant is the Welsh word for "two" - two figures or two heads......This could, in fact, depict two saints.' Doesn't deusant just mean saints, rather than figures or heads? Any Welsh speakers in the Portal?

Yes you are correct 'Deusant' in Welsh means "two saints". Trysant means "three saints" and Pumpsaint means "five saints" and so on. There are others. Although I'm not a Welsh speaker, I am quite familiar with Welsh words. I did quite a lot of research some years ago for a book on Celtic saints, which I did manage to get published.

Hi - thanks for that, so 'Deusant is the Welsh word for "two"' could be bit confusing then?

Anon, like Sunny100 I am not (yet) a Welsh speaker, so I have found the guide to Welsh Place-names produced by the ONS to be really useful - it even lets you know that the Tarren part of the site being discussed means 'rocky tump'! Not many people know that....
You will find the guide here

Deu sant is 2 Saints, as in Llandeusant, the church of the 2 Saints.
