Standing Stone (Menhir) in Midlothian

This stone, now destroyed, is recorded on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) page for Bell Stane, Queensferry, Midlothian, where they describe the archaeology and history of the area immediately surrounding the stone, and show its location on an 1896 map. TNA tell us that Stuart Harris, an Edinburgh historian, fromhis research in many sources, thought the site to be "a conspicuous boulder or standing stone."

TNA also point us to Canmore ID 50517, which says this is only a "carved stone, set into wall of house, decorated with an owl. The Bell Stane was probably a stone near the Mercat Cross on which the hand bell was set (rung to herald the opening of the weekly market or annual fair). At a later date the "Bell Stane" was applied to the locality." Their record also includes an image of the carved stone.
