markj99 visited on 21st Nov 2012 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Take the turn onto Dan-Y-Coed, a residential dead-end street on the S edge of Pontsticill. There is room to park at the end of the cul-de-sac. Follow a grass track N for c. 200 yards to reach a sheepfold. Walk NW for c. 300 yards to a small stone covered cairn, Bryn Glas III. Walk c. 30 yards N to Bryn Glas IV, then c. 85 yards N to Pontsticill Ring Cairn and its small satellite cairn Bryn Glas V. My route is viewable on Pontsticill Cairns. The Bryn Glas cairns are difficult to locate in open moorland due to their low stature. GPS navigation would be advantageous.

Pontsticill is a village approx 2 miles N of Merthyr Tydfil in Mid Glamorgan. There is a group of cairns approx 700 yards NW of Pontsticill on open moorland. The cairns range from small clearance cairns, round burial cairns and a ring cairn.

The principal monument is a ring cairn, located furthest N at S005271170. Coflein 300944 states that Pontsticill Ring Cairn measures approx 16.2m in overall diameter and 0.3m high. A stony bank, varying from 1 to 1.5 metres wide, forms the perimeter of the round cairn, surrounding a flat featureless grassy interior. The low ring cairn is difficult to pick out in rough moorland.

There is a satellite cairn approx 5m SE of Pontsticill Ring Cairn, listed as Coflein 275008. It is named as Bryn Glas Cairn V. This round cairn, which measures approx 5m in diameter and 0.4m in height, has small scattered stones in the centre.

Bryn Glas Cairn IV is located approx 100 yards S of Pontsticill Ring Cairn. Coflein 275007 describes it as a round cairn measuring approx 5m in diameter by 0.4m high. Small scattered stones are embedded in the centre of the cairn.

Bryn Glas Cairn III lies approx 30 yards S of Bryn Glas IV. According to Coflein 275006, this round cairn measures approx 6-7 metres in diameter and 0.3m in height. There is a significant scattering of small to medium stones on the grass surface of the cairn. There are also traces of a small excavation in the centre of the low mound.

These 4 cairns form a N-S linear alignment, elevating Pontsticill cairns to a significant presence in the ancient landscape.

I didn't see the site on the map but forgot to search for Pontsticill. Changing the name to Bryn Glas or Bryn Glas (Pontsticill) would solve the problem.

Thanks for all your site and photo additions markj99, but if possible, try and give a name which would be unique and hopefully match up with any other historical databases. Often we have sitepages just named after the local village, as here, particularly early sitepages when our database was much smaller. As well as the obvious confusion, this also causes problems with pictures matching up to the correct sitepage when multiple sites have the same name.

I have changed the sitepage name to Bryn Glas Cairns (Pontsticill), which seems to represent the multiple cairns and match up with the Coflein names better. I have also changed the inscribed stone to Pontsticill Inscribed Stone. This also then means changing all of the photograph names sent.

I think something went wrong here. The name of the site is twice on our page. The nearby early Christian sculptured stone has the same name and the photos mixed.
