Ancient Cross in Scotland
The remains of this ancient cross are recorded as Canmore ID 50492, where it was described in 1899 as: "This is a plain square cross-base with a hollow socket 0.37m square and 0.23m deep. It is set on a larger sandstone plinth, which is assumed to be relatively modern."
By 1968, further archaeological notes had been added which read: "Only the socket-stone remains of the cross which stood here. It measures 3 1/2' x 3 1/4', with its corners roughly bevelled, and in its centre is a 15" square socket, 10" deep. This stone is embedded in a modern sandstone base, 5 1/4' square, and in the socket there is a loose stone, which does not appear to have formed part of the original monument. It is commonly assumed that this cross marked the spot that gave pilgrims their first sight of Dunfermline Abbey."
The Canmore entry includes a drawing of the cross from 1860, when it was first discovered and photographs from 1927. At the time of our visit, we could see the socket stone with a small portion of cross shaft protruding. If there was a larger base underneath, as shown on the old photographs, it was well hidden by soil and turf.
The only way we could find to access this cross base was to park on the north side of the B924 Forth Valley Road, where the pavement widened at about NT 15101 77802 and walk north west along the road to the gate into the field at NT 15043 77827. From here we walked 100 metres or so to the northern edge of the field, then had to clamber over a double barbed wire fence. The cross base is just up the slope of this wooded area, overlooking the road. The modern road has obviously been blasted out of the rock, leaving small cliffs on either side of the road. We presumed that if this cross gave pilgrims their first sight of Dunfermline Abbey, at the other side of the Forth, the old track used to run right by the cross. Today, there is just a drop of 3-4m to the B924 below.
