Re: Birnie (upside-down) by Anonymous on Tuesday, 04 February 2014
The Birnie Stone is very much worn, although the main reason for the difficulty in seeing the carved eagle is that the stone has been erected UPSIDE-DOWN! Much of the eagle symbol is in fact under the earth.

You can clearly see this if you closely compare the shape of the whole stone with the sketch made by John Stuart in his 19th century book "The Sculptured Stones of Scotland".

PLEASE NOTE: NONE OF THE ABOVE PHOTOGRAPHS RELATE TO THE BIRNIE cI PICTISH STONE.

The stone is said to have represented an eagle above a notched rectangle with z-rod. From afar and indeed up close little is visible today, remnants of the z-rod can be seen, and I can just palpate a shallow groove indicating a rather simple eagle, but sadly the stone has been left at the edge of the graveyard to be etched away by the elements. Large granite stone.

Strangely enough there are 4 other fragments, which because they were not outwardly pagan, but showed part of a cross-slab, were taken into the church for safe keeping!!!!!

I have recently posted a picture of the stone to judge for yourself the damage.
