Cairn in Cumbria
We accessed these fells from the Corney Fell road at Grid Ref SD 150 899. The track is fairly straightforward but can be boggy following a wall which takes you to Little Paddy and Great Paddy Crags and then onto Buckbarrow and Guide Crags. Very rocky summits in a grassy moorland setting. Wild and empty but very atmospheric.
Buckbarrow Crag is Grid Ref SD152911 as indicated above but we went onto Hare Raise and Burn Moor before accessing Whitfell. Hare Raise Grid Ref SD147924 looked like a settlement although the circles were difficult to see with a fairly prominent pile of stones that seemed to be a cairn.
Burn Moor Grid Ref SD149925 was like Hare Raise another settlement with a cairn we think.
Whitfell and its Cairn GPS Ref SD14975 93303 was most impressive. We were amazed at all the work and man hours that prehistoric man must have put into building this remarkable and very large cairn. It is grand and other cairns we've seen would pale into insignificance if compared side by side. Whitfell must be a hugely significant mountain and the size of the edifice must say a lot about prominence in society of the person or persons buried there. The stones in the middle have been modified by walkers to form
a shelter.
The views from Whitfell, Buckbarrow and Burn Moor are amazing and breathtaking.Again the cairns are placed carefully it would seem with an eye for spectacle . We could even see the Isle of Man but the hazy weather wasn't kind to my photograph and it can be seen if you look really carefully in the sky on the horizon.
Just a thought...do any cairns, circles and settlements on the Isle of Man line up with Whitfell etc?
The photo of the ancient field patterns was taken from Buckbarrow summit looking east towards White How.
