Holy Well / Spring in Perthshire,
When the Romans were in this area as long ago as 84AD they probably stopped at this well to rest and ‘take the waters’. A hospital was established on the site by the Red Friars in 1250 and the well became a popular destination for pilgrims, one of whom was Robert the Bruce who was hoping for a cure for his leprosy. The waters were believed to cure a wide range of afflictions.

The well is down a very short lane which runs off the main road through Scotlandwell, almost opposite Leslie Road. It is signposted from the main road. The present structure over the well was built around 1858 as part of general improvements in the village.

For more information see Canmore ID 169295, which contains basic information. More details can be found on The Journal of Antiquities entry for Scotlandwell (Holy Well), Perth And Kinross, Central Scotland, which includes a drawing of this holy well, photographs, a list of source information and links to related websites. Interestingly, the Journal adds that the Romans named the well 'Fons Scotiae' and by the late 13th century the local friars were using the water in their hospice.

That's great news for sufferers of that ailment! Maybe someone should bottle the water and put it on sale to the general public.

The place is magical. The water cures all ills. And the wee set of football goals are class.
