Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria
The Cumbria Historic Environment Record, number 2332, classifies this well as a holy well, and describes it as: "St/Sir Michaels Well, a roadside spring of clear water, walled in, and never dry. Said to be named after Sir Michael Le Fleming whose family settled in the neighbourhood at the time of William Rufus (the son and successor of William The Conqueror). The well is at the east end of a cottage whose wall forms one side; a high retaining wall forms the northern side, and in front is a thick flagstone on edge to hold back the water which springs from the ground to form a small pool. The site was assessed as part of MPP (?). The well was not considered to be of national importance and is thus not recommended for scheduling at the present time".
The Old Cumbria Gazetteer makes brief mention of this well - see their entry for St Michael's Well. The county boundaries have changed, and this well used to be in Lancashire rather than Cumbria.
The well is mentioned in a recent Facebook posting, and is described as being 'well cared for' - see the photographs by Claire Heron on Holy and Historic Wells of Cumbria. It is also recorded in a number of publications, including Taylor's 1906 book "The Ancient Crosses and Holy Wells of Lancashire", pages 312-313.
Does anyone have any more information about this well, and can confirm whether or not it has holy associations? If so, do you know whether its waters were (are) used for healing and/or restorative purposes?
Have you visited this site? Do you have any photographs you can add? Thank you.
