Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

Typing in the grid reference for this well into the Historic England Map Search brings up a site called 'holy well' (unnamed) displayed on current mapping. Also recorded in the Cumbria Historic Environment Record as HER number 2194, their description of this well reads: "A 'holy well' is situated in a field called 'Farkillin'. The well is covered and formerly it flowed through an iron trough 3ft long, 13ins wide and 8.5ins thick, but the trough has subsequently been moved ca 65m SSE of the well".

The well is mentioned briefly in the Old Cumbria Gazetteer - see their entry for Holy Well (Askam and Ireleth), but there are no further details given.

There is no mention of the well in the Heritage Gateway, nor is it recorded in McIntyre's 1944 publication "The Holy Wells of Cumberland".

Does anyone know any information about this well, and how it came to have associations with St Helen? Do you know if its waters were used for healing and/or restorative purposes?

The current location of the well can clearly be seen on Google Earth images, as a circular patch of bare earth, with some sort of structure within. Have you visited this site? Do you have any photographs you can add?

Thank you.

The well's house building has been "reconstructed inside St Mary's Church Dalton. It has been mapped brick by brick and is situated at the back of the church with information and photos of the well house before it was removed.
