Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Midlothian.
The site is marked and named on the 1850s OS maps, and is still shown on contemporary OS and A-Z maps. In the 19th century the area was a drying green containing a number of wells.

The spring is now covered by a manhole, but had had some work done on it by March 2003, when the water was flowing again and some of the structure could be seen.

The name is derived from the delf, the pit dug into marshy ground, in which the water is collected.

Delf Well submitted by rogerkread : The well as it appeared in March 2017, looking rather forlorn and abandoned I thought. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Delf Well
Delf Well submitted by KiwiBetsy : In July 2006 water was barely seeping from the pipe in the side of the well, but water could be heard running beneath the cover and judging by the wetness of the ground some of the water had made it’s own arrangements. There may have once been a cup for visitors to drink from as a short length of chain can be seen still attached to the concrete top of the well. The Delf Well can be found...
