Pen-y-Wyrlod submitted by TheCaptain : Pen-y-wyrlod, Chambered Tomb, Powys, SO224398 There is one smashing little slab sided chamber about 3 by 1.5 metres, with the stones protruding well up out of the remains of a stone built mound. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chambered Tomb in Powys. Marked on the OS map as Long Cairn, the remains of this tomb can be found by driving along the little lane which take you between Hay on Wye and the Gospel Pass. Travelling from Hay, after a couple of miles the lane turns sharp left and steepens, and there is a suitable parking place where the footpath goes north into the field which contains this tomb, about 100m from the road.

I found it hard to determine exactly what the remains here once consisted of. I could see no obvious outline to a mound, and it seemed a fairly odd place for one to be, almost in a little hollow on the hillside, not the usual ridge. There is one smashing little slab sided chamber about 3 by 1.5 metres, with the stones protruding well up out of the remains of a stone built mound. Further west the remains of another smaller chamber can be made out in the edge of the stone mound. It is possible that there are other chambers here to the east of the obvious chamber, as there are several stone slabs as well as lumps and bumps in the ground to be seen scattered about, and indeed what seems to be some slabs positioned on edge.

But the situation is complicated by natural outcrops of rock here, which seem to have been quarried in the past, and could have been used to make the monument. There are some nice layers of stone, which it would appear to have had slabs removed from them, which give the impression of chambers or other features.

I would be interested to know if anyone knows more about this place.

Pen-y-Wyrlod
Pen-y-Wyrlod submitted by cerrig : This is the view today looking South West. It is now a very overgrown site, but originally, without the trees, it would have been possible to see the Black mountain, at the far end of the Brecon Beacons,50 miles away. A short walk to the North gets around the trees to confirm this. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Pen-Y-Wyrlod submitted by chumbawala : PEN-Y-WYRLOD, AS FOUND ON THE MULTI MAP. IT IS A RELEIF TO FIND IT AFTER TRAVELLING UP THE STEEP, NARROW ROADS. IT IS AN OLD BURIAL CHAMBER, C.2500BC, AND THE AREA AROUND IT IS STILL INTACT. THERE IS NO PARKING, AND YOU HAVE TO CLIMB OVER A STILE TO GET THERE. THE VIEWS OF THE RIVER FROM THE FIELD BELOW IS WORTH THE DETOUR. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Situated exactly as the map says, the 5000 scale map is needed to pin point it, but it is visible from the road on the big bend. Four upright slabs form the chamber, and though worn, are still recognisable. The views from here are also worth the trek up.
