Cairn in Cumbria

We found several cairns on the walk up from Brown Howe which is on the main Coniston road beside Coniston Water on the route to join the Cumbrian Way and then on to Beacon Tarn. We wanted to investigate the cairn marked on the OS map at SD 2725490383. Again the approach was through a sea of bracken but at Grid Ref SD2802791443 we found evidence of several cairns. They are probably much more obvious in winter without the bracken. At Grid Ref 2756190555 we found more cairns.

Eventually we found the object of our visit and this one was a pile of stones on a quite large platform, possibly 12 m across. The view was magnificent in all directions and we came across the view quite suddenly. What a place for a cairn and surrounded by purple from the ling and heather! This area is in close proximity to White Borran Cairns.

Blawith Fells and Tarn Riggs (near Beacon Tarn) submitted by Alphasmam : From the ridge path leading up to the cairn on Grid Ref 2725490383 a valley meets the path from a northerly direction and it appears to be marked by quite large stones. This is one of them.I looked like it was standing on chock stones. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Blawith Fells and Tarn Riggs (near Beacon Tarn) submitted by Alphasmam : This cairn can be seen from along a grassy ridge path. The platform it stands on is perhaps 12 m across and not quite on the highest point but it commands a special position with views all around. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Blawith Fells and Tarn Riggs (near Beacon Tarn)
Blawith Fells and Tarn Riggs (near Beacon Tarn) submitted by Alphasmam : The view from the ancient cairn featured by Michael Graham 2007 looks towards Beacon Tarn but this view is in the opposite direction looking over the bulk of the Coniston and Duddon fells. Spectacular view over purple heather. These people could certainly find a panoramic view. (Vote or comment on this photo)
