Airlie
Airlie submitted by cosmic : The Airlie Standing Stone at NO321502 in Angus lies just south of the A926 just to the East of the village. Unfortunately crops in the field meant I couldn't get close back it looked to be well over 6 feet tall with good views over the Carse of Gowrie. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This stone is situated near Alyth. The stone is normally over 2 metres tall, and has no distinguishing marks, but is quite dramatic as it leans to the south. (or used to,...)

Taking the A926 east from Alyth, through Ruthven and the village of Airlie, it is immediately visible to the right, highlighted against the sky. There is a convenient farm gate nearby, which can be parked in short term.

Note: Human remains found in Bronze Age pots as stone base is excavated for re-erection, due to happen on Friday.

Airlie submitted by golux : Looking rather sad, this is the stone after it fell over in January 2011. In this photo, the left end is the top; I guess the cleaner, pinker part at the other end indicates where it would have been below ground - which is not much of a footing. Funny, that after all this time, only now has it toppled. Will is be returned to it's original state, or will it be left as part of the development of this period of history. After all, it's been there long enough, it's only fair that it shows this stage of "decay".

Although this page refers to the "Airlie" stone, RCAHMS call it "Cairnwell" with an alternative name "Carlinwell". I don't know what Cairnwell might be, I don't see it on the map, but just along the road to the east are Carlinwell Cottages.

Human remains found in Bronze Age pots as stone base is excavated for re-erection by Andy B on Wednesday, 09 March 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
Two Bronze Age burial pots containing human remains have been found at the base of a standing stone in Angus.

Archaeologists excavated the ground around the Carlinwell Stone at Airlie, near Kirriemuir, after it fell over earlier in the winter.

Both pots - known as collared urns - could be up to 4,000 years old and were typically used in early Bronze age cremation burials.

The 7ft (2.1m) high monolith will be re-erected on Friday.

One of the pots is about 4in (10cm) in diameter, and the other is about 8in, the archaeologists said.
