The Walk Well
The Walk Well submitted by AJHL : The sign is a bit misleading as the walk well is actually located down the Bailey path with the river on your right and then down the bottom of the very steep river bank. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Below St Mary’s church, if you head towards the river Wye, you pass through a tunnel on to the old bailey path. Turn left and a short time later you can turn right down the very steep bank past the eye well down on to the ancient medieval wharf which is nearly level with the river.

The spring trickles in to a very overgrown rectangular stone basin. The walking well is one of the 7 wells of Hay-on-Wye and local traditions say that troublesome spirits were laid to rest here. It’s very overgrown and atmospheric but great care must be taken descending the bank as it is almost vertical in places.
