Anne T visited on 14th Jul 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Kinnerton Court Standing Stones: We'd walked up into the village first, to see if we could locate the old village wells, but were unsuccessful, as they seemed to have been incorporated into the modern water supply or dried up and disappeared. We did walk up to the Kinnerton Castle Mound, which is actually on private land, but can be seen (and photographed) from various vantage points in the village. The first stone (the recumbent one) we had difficulty spotting as it was buried in tall grass and weeds, but did spot it reasonably quickly. The other is on the opposite side of the road, in a lush field of pasture, and a very pretty spot. We thought we were on the footpath as we walked up to the stone, but walking back to the field gate, found the sign actually pointed along the field boundary/hedge-line to the west of the still standing stone. Whoops - sorry.

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by TimPrevett : The stone in its place in the field; noticed the curved top to the stone, and then follow up to the horizon, and notice the curved hillock above it. Coincidence? Other stones in other places appear to mimmick hill shapes behind them... perhaps this lends more credence to it being a standing stone rather than a scratching post. Perhaps. Two Standing Stones (one now recumbent) in Powys

Of these two stones, one is recumbent and one standing. One, Kinnerton Court Stone II lies on the western side of the road running north into Kinnerton Village, the other to the south east, towards the eastern edge of the field which contains it.

The stone at SO 2449 6281 is recumbent, and at the time of our visit was partially hidden by tall grass and weeds. Our first impression was that it was just a boulder by the side of the road, but this stone is recorded as Archwilio PRN 1069.

Crossing the road, the standing stone, recorded as Kinnerton Court Stone I and Archwilio PRN 1070, can be found at SO 24564 62735.

Both stones are recorded as Coflein NPRN 306391.

Kinnerton submitted by TimPrevett : The rounded stone at Kinnerton... well within a bowl. One imagines that this must get severely water logged at times. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by PaulM : One of the supposed two Kinnerton standing stones. A dumpy stone but at least the farmer knows it is there. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by TheWhiteRider : We could only find one of the Kinerton Standing Stones. This one, just visible in the long grass is right next to a footpath. The other, according to the map, is just a little way down the road, but appears to be on private land and is hidden by a high hedge and other foliage. A visit during the Winter months may offer a glimpse of it. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : Standing just south of the stone, looking northwards, it looks as if the top of the stone has been sheared off at some time in the distant past. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : Looking east across this short, squat standing stone.

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : Getting closer to this standing stone, looking SSE along the field boundary. The stone sits in a lush meadow of pasture, in a very pretty location. Kinnerton Castle Mound lies not far to the north.

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : First sight of the Kinnerton Court Stone I, which is in the field to the south-east of Kinnerton Court Stone II. We thought we were on the footpath, but afterwards found the footpath ran along the edge of the next field, not this one. The stone is in a hollow in the ground, presumably caused by sheep/stock rubbing around it.

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : In case anyone is confused, the location of Kinnerton Court Stone II is marked by the red arrow. With the tall grass and weeds which surrounded this stone, it was a little difficult to spot at first.

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : Standing on the road, looking westwards towards Kinnerton Court Stone II, now recumbent, and said to have been relocated from its original position in information recorded in Archwilio PRN 1069.

Kinnerton submitted by Anne T : Standing on top of the bank, next to the fence of the nearest house, looking down on top of Kinnerton Court Stone II.

Kinnerton submitted by AngieLake : The stone at Kinnerton. I didn't want to disturb the ponies in the field, so had to be content with this shot from the gate. 6 June 08

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by TimPrevett : Just as we were pulling away from the gate for the more obvious Kinnerton stone, and having spied the one across the hedge, this prone stone was noticed across the road. Sadly no time to stop; a tired family and storm moving in ensured that. So, I quickly grabbed this picture from the passenger seat as we moved away. I am not so convinced by this stone, but am putting it here as documentation for ...

Kinnerton
Kinnerton submitted by TimPrevett : This photo is not here for quality - just as a document. Everyone seems to struggle to locate this possible stone. There are meant to be two; one round toppped one in a field is easy enough to find... but this one... to find this I did a scout around the perimeter immediately surrounding the first stone; when on the west side of the field, I spotted this. The picture is taken stretched on tip toe ... (1 comment)

Coflein also lists this (and the other stone) as possible scratching posts. Tim.

Listing the stone as a scratching post is a convenient way of hedging their bets! The stone is in a field named as Stone Meadow on the 1840 Tithe Map, so, if it’s a ‘scratching stone’, it predates 1840 by a good time, and one wonders what is doing in a meadow, rather than pasture....
