Barrow Cemetery and nearby standing stone in Monmouthshire

You can park near the Six Bells bridge on Harpers Road, walk onto the old train line and walk north. After a hundred meters or so you can exit the footpath to your left and walk into the woods, going parallel to the footpath you just left. Keep going into the woodland for a few hundred meter slowly rising as you go. It's not easy going as the undergrowth is quite thick in places. I went at the end of winter when the undergrowth had died back and I still found it difficult to navigate.

The site itself is a strange one, I've taken pics to upload, but because of the undergrowth the barrows are not easy to make out. There is a very old wall enclosing a lot of the barrows, the wall may be a later edition, but it would surprise me if the wall is as old as the barrows themselves.

There is apparently an ancient spring or well in the area, but I couldn't find it.

I found about 6 barrows in total, but I'm sure there are more to be found so I will revisit again in the future.

Hi,

We actually live here and can see our house in the photographs. We own the ground surrounding too.

I know these pictures are a while ago but if you wanted to get in touch for the revisit and we could organise a look around together then we’d find this super interesting.

There were two new sites, one 'Garnteg Barrows', the other 'Garnteg Barrow Cemetery', both with similar text and almost similar grid reference. I also couldn't find anything on Coflein about this site. I've amalgamated the two and added in the menhirs photos. If this is incorrect, I apologise - please post a comment here and I'll amend as needed. Thanks.

Hi there, the "garnteg barrow cemetery" and "garnteg barrows" are separate sites, though they are only a few hundred meters apart. I called the one site a cemetery as they are all very close together, where the other site is larger and the barrows are spaced further apart.

I also noticed the location is wrong. I think there was a typo in the grid ref. The barrow cemetery is SO267046 and the other barrows are SO267047 Thanks

I don't think any of these are ancient sites - Coflein has nothing shown there, and it's a well surveyed area on old OS maps.

I wondered about the photos showing barrows, too David. The old tithe maps for the village show a number of now demolished workers cottages around and near the grid references given, which are around 100m apart.

Hi David, I don't think the site not being shown on Coflein means anything. I also checked the side-by-side OS maps Anne posted, looked at 2 known places where there are ancient sites at SO316077 and ST276850, and the OS map had nothing.

I'm not saying the sites at Garnteg are ancient, I'm just saying because there are no references to them on old OS maps or Coflien doesn't mean they should be discounted.

So just what is it that makes you think that this is a prehistoric burial ground? Have you any evidence at all ?

The topography of the ground mostly. The mounds stand out from the surrounding area and they're not naturally occurring. One of them is half robbed out and you can see it's not an old ash pile from a woodsman cottage, or whatever you think they might be.

Other than an archaeological survey, I'm not sure how you would normally go about classifying something like this, but I'd be interested if there were some guides or reading material to assist?

Hello, thehappydruid. You ask about contacting someone to look into this further. In England, I would contact the County Archaeologist; in Scotland, I would send a message through the Canmore enquiries system. There is a Coflein contact form at RCAHMW Contact Us Form, or you could try through Monmouthshire Council, and ask for their Archaeology or Historical & Environment Officer. If anyone knows a better method, I'd love to hear about it - always happy to learn. Let us know how you get on.

Have one noted Garndiffaith Pyramid on the net, same site.
Walked the site March 2019 with someone who had played the site 40 years ago.
I was advised how the site was being damaged from children from the additional housing sites.
The was a ancient spring with a boundary wall 18 ft in dia with steps, the area now is just a bog with no sign of the once walling.
