Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap
Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap submitted by Alphasmam : This is a very prominent cairn with a terrific all round view but commanding a spectacular view of Langdale and the site of the axe factories. It isn't very obvious when up close of any ancient stone laying as the generations of walkers have added to it. But as there are cairns lower down its flanks I feel this might be the site of one. In any case it is worth a walk up there for the view. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn in Cumbria

Holmes Fell cairn at NY 316 008 and the Uskdale Gap cairn at NY 317 009 are easily reached by a very strenuous shortish steep path through Harry Guards Woods from Yew Tree Tarn on the Coniston to Ambleside road. I think we found evidence of cairns at a place called Ivy Crag but they were very overgrown with moss and bracken, the old old story in this area.
The Uskdale gap area is the crossing point of several small paths linking the Coniston valleys to the east and south with the Little Langdale valley and then on to Great Langdale valley to the North and west.(site of the axe factories and settlements).

The summit cairn on Holmes Fell has undoubtedly been added to by enthusiastic walkers but what a view to the axe factories. In our climbing days we regarded them as ice axe factories!

The remnants of an ancient wall dogleg across the top of the pass past the cairn in a northerly direction and in the other direction up towards the summit.Could this be of significance?

Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap
Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap submitted by Alphasmam : The cairn on Uskdale Gap has an ancient wall running past it. The wall zig zags from Holmes Fell flanks across the gap. I wondered if it was an ancient boundary between the valleys of maybe some sort of enclosure. It is not marked on maps. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap
Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap submitted by Alphasmam : This cairn is right in the middle of several paths where they come together on the col between the various surrounding little summits. The outer ring of stones is about 2 or 3 metres out from the pile of stones in view. Walkers have modified it over the years. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap
Holmes Fell and Uskdale Gap submitted by Alphasmam : This view shows Holmes Fell summit in the centre and below it the flanks of the fell seem to have remnants of cairns scattered about but hard to see because of the vegetation. I'll investigate at a later date. (Vote or comment on this photo)
