Cairn in Cumbria
Holmes Fell cairn at NY 316 008 and the Uskdale Gap cairn at NY 317 009 are easily reached by a very strenuous shortish steep path through Harry Guards Woods from Yew Tree Tarn on the Coniston to Ambleside road. I think we found evidence of cairns at a place called Ivy Crag but they were very overgrown with moss and bracken, the old old story in this area.
The Uskdale gap area is the crossing point of several small paths linking the Coniston valleys to the east and south with the Little Langdale valley and then on to Great Langdale valley to the North and west.(site of the axe factories and settlements).
The summit cairn on Holmes Fell has undoubtedly been added to by enthusiastic walkers but what a view to the axe factories. In our climbing days we regarded them as ice axe factories!
The remnants of an ancient wall dogleg across the top of the pass past the cairn in a northerly direction and in the other direction up towards the summit.Could this be of significance?
