In 2019,excavations led by Professor Gordon Noble of Aberdeen University "rediscovered" the Pictish occupation level found by Time Team in 2008, and proceeded further, obtaining dateable material which indicated that the range of occupation dates was 50AD to 500AD, pushing the horizon back considerably.

[alt name added to site page. thanks. admin] More usually referred to as Sliding Cave, it gets its names from the fact that it descends fairly steeply from its entrance, which is situated just above the beach about 100 metres east of Jonathan's Cave. Access is difficult, involving clambering over rocks and boulders and climbing a short grassy slope with nettles and thorns. Time Team excavated in the cave in 2005 and reported that they came down to a Pictish occupation level. There are three Pictish carvings, best examined virtually at http://www.4dwemysscaves.org. This cave is not included in the guided tours conducted by Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society (SWACS) due to the difficulties of access.
