Standing Stone (Menhir) in Monmouthshire

You can park near the Six Bells bridge on Harpers Road, walk onto the old train line and walk north. After a couple of hundred meters you will come to a clearing on your right. The standing stone is about 4ft tall and is about 40 meters into the field to the left of the clearing, and is situated in front of a mature tree. The stone is on private land so you will need permission to get any closer.

Directly behind the stone and tree there is a stone wall is a poor state of repair. This did give me pause and wonder if the Menhir is actually an old gate post, but in my opinion the the stone it to big to have been sunk as a gate post, and it's more likely that the wall was built up against it. The tree is very mature and has obviously grown up behind the Menhir, through the wall and knocked it down. So the wall itself must be many hundreds of years old.

In the same field (to your right and a little closer) there is a nice Barrow cemetery. It's on the same private land, but is clearly visible in a stand of trees. There's about 4 barrows in total, the 2 closest look in good condition.

There is nothing recorded on Coflein for this standing stone, or the nearby barrows/barrow cemetery. I worry about this being a standing stone as, having enlarged the photograph, the top and side closest to the fence line appears very straight, as if it's been cut by modern machinery. However, I haven't seen it for myself, so am reluctant to judge.

I understand, I mention in my description that it could be an old fence post, though I don't agree that sharp, flat or straight edges necessarily means it's a modern stone. Look at something like this: https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=35649 and you can see there are sharp well defined edges.

Also, if something is not listed on Coflein doesn't mean it should be discounted or it's not worth further investigation.
