St John’s Church stands next to the ‘Old Corpse Road’ at St John’s in the Vale, on the slopes of the Helvellyn Range. The well is outside the church. Its waters are said to come from a ‘healing spring’.

The present church dates from 1845 with parts of the older buildings incorporated in the newer building. The earliest reference to a church here is from 1554.
