Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Shropshire

St Oswald was killed by the Mercians in battle in 642AD. Despite being mortally wounded himself, he was heard praying for the souls of his bodyguard. His head and body were displayed on stakes for a year but were finally recovered after the defeat of the Mercians. This spring is supposed to have gushed forth where his arm was dropped on the ground during transportation of his remains ….. another version is that the arm was dropped by an eagle.

This well is located in a sunken garden area just off Maserfield Road in Oswestry.

The secondary story association of the well with an arm dropped by an eagle says a lot about its pre Roman tribal affiliations. A mythological association of flesh dropping above from/by an eagle creates a strong connection to Gwynedd's Llew (Llew of the Long Hand/Arm) who after his betrayal by his wife Blouedywedd (sp? :-)), appearing mortally wounded was transformed into an eagle and flew off to a far off location in the East. His father, Gwyddion of Gwynedd, heir to Math ap Mathnwy King of Gwynedd and son of Don the White Sow went in search of him to find him far away in what we now call Powys in "farmland", led by a local farmer's old whites sow who had taken to sneaking out each day and returned very full and fat at night.

Following the pig the next morning (Gwyddion stories often included a pig as it was his totemic association animal) whereupon he discovered Llew up in an old oak tree leaning over a spring still in eagle form, and dropping rotting flesh while dying to the ground below whereupon it was being devoured by the sow and significantly adding to her girth. The penultimate Bard and magician, Gwyddion then coaxed The Long Arm out of the tree and to ground to then magically transform him back to human form and health. Father and son then returned back to coastal Gwynedd to exact revenge.

This associates through the later Warrior King Saint Oswald with ancient Warrior God Llew the area of the Northern Midlands (Powys) with Gwynedd and Wales rather than the Britons of the East and South, regardless the inland locale. As such, it isn't unreasonable to later see a possibility of tribal ties between Cornovii there and the Wales of today rather than present day British territory as Northern Shropshire England. The post Roman associations of Powys as more Welsh and having close ties with Gwynedd than some believe today is much better when viewed in this light, but just the most eastern part of North Wales, not the most Western part of the English Midlands.
