Burfa Camp
Burfa Camp submitted by Postman : Ramparts at Burfa Camp (Vote or comment on this photo)
One of the ramparts of Burfa hillfort in Powys. The interior is very overgrown with thickets of saplings, brambles and nettles making it difficult to get any perspective of the fort. According to Coflein the size is 579m by up to 187m, with a bank and ditch above steep slopes, except to the west, where there are three to four banks and ditches.

Offa's Dyke runs close by and seems to reference this hillfort

I haven't visited here, but on the map it looks similar, though differently oriented, to the fort at Credenhill which is 14 straight miles away.

Coflien says: A substantial and irregular hilltop enclosure, 579m by up to 187m, defined by a bank and ditch above steep slopes, except to the W, where there are three-four banks and ditches, incorporating a torturous entrance approach.

I live in the shadow of Burfa Bank and spend a lot of time walking there. I am still trying to find the water supply as the nearest supply is 100 feet down in our field

How is it pronounced, beerva, burva? And what might it mean?

It is pronounced Burva. Appears in early deeds etc as Burward. No idea what it means.
