Hillfort in Shropshire

Walton Camp is a fine site with breathtaking views towards the Stiperstones, Stapeley Hill and Corndon Hill.

This pear shaped multivallate fort sits on a considerable North -South slope. ArchSearch puts the height variation N-S at 245m - 230m.

The earthworks are in quite good condition except for the Eastern sector where little remains. This appears to have been the entrance as there is some evidence of inturned earthworks. Also a hollow way leads from this Eastern entrance Southwards down the hill for some distance with an earthwork flanking it on the Western side. According to ArchSearch this route is 90m long and may have originally extended as much as 160m to the SW.

There are two banks with ditches surrounding much of the rest of the fort, although the NW sector is quite overgrown. An old piece of rusted farm machinery sits on the outer Northern bank, but other than that the site is largely unspoiled.

From this lovely site we could see Earl's Camp, Castle Ring (Rorrington and Stiperstones) as well as the familiar landmark of Bromlow Callow.
