St Paul's church in Pentre Broughton, Flintshire is located on the east side of Bryn y Gaer Road in a large churchyard used, and extended, as a cemetery. It was built in 1888. Within the village of Pentre Broughton are the sparse remains of a univallate hillfort (PRN 100385) set on the lip of a steep slope. Now known as Bryn Y Gaer it was termed Caer Inharwood in 1740. A trial excavation in 1973 revealed some information about the construction of the rampart.

A Chapel on a Hillfort Rampart: Caersalem Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Bryn-Y-Gaer, Pentre Broughton - Prof. Howard M R Williams

Where can you see a chapel’s burial ground built on the rampart of an Iron Age hillfort?

The answer is Caersalem Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Bryn-Y-Gaer in Pentre Broughton, Wrexham. Built in 1839 and rebuilt in 1878, in latest life it was converted to be a Presbyterian church before it was closed in the 1980s and demolished by 1992. While a private house has replaced the chapel itself, its burial ground remains, a sliver of higher ground adjacent to Bryn-Y-Gaer Lane and on the ridge-top overlooking Pentre Broughton Community Cemetery to its north-east.

Details of Howard's visit is here
