Hillfort in Shropshire

A small U-shaped hillfort situated atop Radnor Wood, near Clunbury.

The fort lies roughly E/W with the possibly unfinished open end to the East.

The defenses comprise a stone bank, outer ditch and outer scarp bank and are quite impressive, but fade away to nothing as you follow them towards the East of the site.

The western bank and ditch is now bisected by a modern entrance and causeway, believed to date from 1908 when the path to the top of the hill was constructed.

The entire woodland is managed by the Forestry Commission and is open access. There is enough space to park within the entrance on the B4368. Follow the paths ever upwards and around the hill and take the narrower path to the top. The fort is clear of the large conifers that dominate the hill, but is covered in small trees, birch, ash and brambles. Nearby, bluebell shoots were beginning to appear in large numbers and sorrel was growing all around.

A very pleasant spot and a really interesting site; all that was missing was a decent view from the top.
