Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

This well used to be in the county of Lancashire, but boundary changes now put it in Cumbria. Classified as a holy well and recorded on the Cumbria Historic Environment Record as HER No. 3342, the CHER notes tell us: "Supposed site of a medieval holy well (NAS 1975). No well could be located in 1978. The area is very low lying and regularly flooded by the river (Crake). The river has in the past changed course, and the gas board has put a large pipe throught the field, which may have affected the site (Thompson, site visit, 1978)."

The location of the well is shown on both Google Earth images and HE map search as being in a small area enclosed by earthen banks, although no sign of the well is visible.

The well is listed in the 1975 report by Clack and Gosling, "Archaeology in the North: Gazetteer, Northern Archaeological Survey (HMSO)".

Does anyone know anything more about this well, and why it has been classified as a holy well? Do you know what its waters were used for? Have you visited this site and have any photographs to add? Thank you.
