Cairn (or a mill mound?) in Lancashire

This mound is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1435233 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 39380, described as a circular mound with a height of 2.3 metres. For years, it was thought this mound was either of glacial origin or was a feature 'of great antiquity'. Recently, it has been 'de-bunked' as possibly a modified mill-mound or garden feature, now utilised as a mound for the Preesall War Memorial.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Haken’s Mound, Preesall, Lancashire. The Journal tells us: "According to ‘the’ local legend and, to some extent “myth” Haken or Haakon, an early 10th century Viking chieftain, who settled half a mile or so up the road at Hakensall in Knott-End-On-Sea, was buried inside the mound that is today known as ‘The Mount'." The Journal includes a list of reference sources for more information.

Re: Hakon's Mound (Preesall) by Anonymous on Sunday, 11 August 2019
I know the site well. It cannot be natural feature as all the surrounding land is mainly flat and historically marsh land. There is an old House (Parrox Hall) circa 300m from the site so the thought that it could have once been a garden feature is not impossible. Perhaps there are records in the hall archives which may help? The excavations required to erect the 1st World War memorial cross on top of the mound must have been significant and I doubt whether the workforce could have resisted the temptation to excavate more than was strictly required to complete the job. It would be interesting to read any contemporary records of this. However, I like the idea that it is the last rest of an ancient Viking King. The land around Preesall and Knott End in ancient days would have been very different to what it is now. It was once a labyrinth of wild estuarine gullies .... just the place to hide the burial mound of your beloved King and the treasures that are to accompany him into the afterlife???

Hi Anonymous, my cousin lives just up the road from the mound and so that's why I have been interested in the grassy mound at Preesall. I went to my uncle's funeral wake at Parrox Hall. What a nice place that is. My uncle was well-known in Knott End. Thanks very much for your message and the interesting historical information.
