Kirriemuir Stone Circle
Kirriemuir Stone Circle submitted by MAIGO : There is a big standing stone at Kirriemuir Hill, is it a part of stone circle? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Possible stone circle / standing stone in Angus

According to the RCAHMS webpage there is no circle here, just a standing stone -
"This standing stone is situated on the top of Kirriemuir Hill; it measures 1.9m by 0.6m at the base and is 2.7m high. There is a small upright stone in the field-wall 6m to the E." (RCAHMS 1983)

Update November 2017: This site is recorded as Canmore ID 32295, the 1909 entry of which reads: "This standing stone is 9' high and 6'6" across the base. The New Statistical Account (NSA - 1845) notes a fragment 12'9" long lying on the ground, but this had disappeared by 1909. Reid (1909) suggests that the two stones may have formed part of a circle, the recumbent one not having broken off as suggested in the NSA." In 1983, a further entry was added: "This standing stone is situated on the top of Kirriemuir Hill; it measures 1.9m by 0.6m at the base and is 2.7m high. There is a small upright stone in the field-wall 6m to the E."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this site - see their entry for Kirriemuir Hill, Kirriemuir, Angus, which has directions for finding this stone, together with photographs, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

Note for visitors: Kirriemuir is the birthplace of JM Barrie, and this stone is just to the east of Peter Pan Park!
