A potentially prehistoric enclosure with evidence of later activity dating to the medieval period. Following the past discovery of prehistoric flint tools as well as stone axe fragments there is a considerable chance of there being a prehistoric, possibly Neolithic settlement on ‘The Knapp’.

Dig at The Knapp (Bredwardine), 25th June 2011 to 17th July by Andy B on Saturday, 18 June 2011
(User Info | Send a Message)
Herefordshire Archaeology and the Bredwardine and Brobury History Society thank Mike Jones who owns Knapp Farm, Bredwardine, Herefordshire for allowing access to ‘The Knapp’, Bredwardine in order to carry out a community led archaeological investigation that will commence from 25th June 2011 to 17th July 2011.

The project will be centred at the summit of ‘The Knapp’ with the aim of investigating firstly the possible location of a structure associated to the development of medieval Bredwardine (SMR 15706). Secondly, following the past discovery of prehistoric flint tools as well as stone axe fragments there is a considerable chance for there being a prehistoric, possibly Neolithic settlement on ‘The Knapp’, if so this would widen our knowledge on the dispersal of early societies within the county and region.

The investigation will involve an initial geophysical survey in order to identify any buried archaeology. This will be quickly followed by a detailed survey that will plan the general topography of ‘The Knapp’. This information will be of great importance, allowing for the accurate plotting of trench locations for future reference and final report of works.

A total of four trenches are planned for excavation on ‘The Knapp’ with a maximum dimension of 4m x 4m or 6m x 2m, this will depend on the nature of the topography and results of the geophysics. The process of excavation will see the cutting of turf into blocks and careful stacking up to 3m away from the trench edge. The excavated spoil will be placed separate to the turf again away from the trench edge by no less that 3m. At the end of excavation all of the spoil will be placed back into the trench by hand and the turfs placed back into position.
