I spotted this when driving past the other day, the site is quite over grown at the moment

It's a large motte in or near a private garden. It looks like the home owner has a small bridge over the trench and onto the mound itself, there is also a gate from the garden into the area where the motte is.

I didn't request access, so I can't say how happy the homeowner would be about these requests.

There is a small parking area on the road opposite.

I added this site and listed it as a Round Barrrow, as that was my first impression. Admin edited my posting and changed it to Motte (artificial mound). I've since done some digging (not literal!) and stand by my original site listing. Most OS maps catagorise it as a Barrow (Tumulus), with only 1 OS map I could find listing it as a Castle Motte.

Any castle sat on this "motte" would've been pretty poor. It might be a fair size Barrow, but would make a very small Motte. Usually, in my experience, a motte also has a slightly flat top which is not in evidence here.

Hi, thehappydruid. Thanks for your comments. I've found this site recorded as Coflein NPRN 307913, which definitely classifies this as a motte. Coflein's site description reads: "The castle mound is located on the north side of Malthouse Road and rests on the steep slopes above the Afon Lwyd. It is an oval mound measuring about 36m east by west by 24m and is 4.7m high; its top measures 19m by 12m. The mound is ditched and counterscarped elsewhere, and is overgrown with trees". If you think I have the wrong site, please post another comment here, and accept my apologies.

Given Coflein's official classification of the site, I would agree with the change from round barrow to artificial mound (although I have previously classified the mottes I've submitted as 'miscellaneous earthworks' if this would suit better?) and have updated the site information and updated the grid reference from 6 figure (ST318924) to 8 figure (ST31899249).

Any problems/issues, please post another comment here. Thank you for your recent contributions - much appreciated!
