Ffynnon Gofer (Llanover)
Ffynnon Gofer (Llanover) submitted by twistytwirly : Bathing pool just below the springheads. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A pre-Christian well that incorporates eight other springs, located in the grounds of Llanover Park. The nine wells/springs are in a secluded grove at the edge of the Y-Tytwyth Wood, one of these is a circular stone pool known as St Gofer's well.

The eight others flow in different directions but converge and flow into two large stone basins and then into a circular stone bath or pool. Long ago the well was famed for its miraculous healing qualities and, according to Bradney's 'History of Monmouthshire', lamness was cured and crutches left at the side of the well. There may have originally been a hermit's cell where the saint lived a life of solitude and prayer, though there is no trace of this now. Francis Jones in his book 'The Holy Wells of Wales' also makes mention of this well. Pilgrimages were held here on the saint's day 9th May.

As for St Gofer or Gofor he was a 6th century monk at Cor Seriol (Penmon) Anglesey. He came to this part of Wales with another missionary called St Ffwyst (Llanfoist). The saint is said to be buried beneath a slab that has a worn ring cross carved onto it just inside the door of St Bartholomew's church in Llanover. Historians think that he was actually called Mofor or Myfor.

Location: about 3 miles south of Abergavenny and close to the A4042 road. You need to walk about half a mile due north of the village to a wooded area beyond which is the park, but which used to be the grounds of Llanover House. Indeed, Lady Llanover and her guests would frequently partake of the well water.
