Ancient Cross in Merseyside
Reconstructed from fragments, an Anglo Saxon cross in the churchyard of St Barnabas', Bromborough. Other Saxon stones, and later period, are kept in the parsonage garden, according to the NMR.
This cross is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1343465 and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 1111138. Pastscape tells us that in the 9th/10th century, the cross originally stood near this site, and "was incorporated in the fabric of the later stone church building on the site of the present church. It was reassembled after the fragments were found during the demolition of the earlier church in 1863. For many years the fragments were stored in the porch and were only recently restored."
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the St Barnabas Churchyard Cross, Bromborough, Wirral, Cheshire, which includes photographs, direction for finding the church, a description, background information about this ancient church, and a list of reference sources for more information.
