Tankerness House Museum
Tankerness House Museum submitted by AlexHunger : On display in the Tankerness House Museum, Kirkwall, the Westray Stone is one of the finest carvings in the Orkney Islands. Note the similarity with carvings in Newgrange and Malta. It is about 1 metre long. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A museum in Kirkwall telling the story of Orkney from prehistoric times to the present day. Situated in a merchant laird's house dating from the 16th Century, it is open throughout the year. The rock-carved Westray Stone was found in 1981 in a tomb at Pierowall, the island’s largest settlement.

The spiral and lozenge design is the finest of its kind in Scotland and is permanently on display at Tankerness House, Kirkwall, home of the Orkney Museum.l
