Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria
Information about this well comes from the Cumbria Historic Environment Record, HER 26 which tells us: "St Andrew's or Neddy Well in the old churchyard, supposedly used for baptisms and said to have local tradition of 'special properties'. OS inspector could find no traces (in) 1970". The well is also referenced in WT McIntire's 1944 publication 'Holy Wells of Cumberland', page 11.
There is another holy well at Kirkandrews-on-Eden, also referred to as St Andrew's or Neddy Well (see our site page St Andrew's Well (Kirkandrews-on-Eden), which does exist, so I'm wondering if there is some confusion between Kirkandrews-on-Eden and Kirkandrews-on-Esk.
There is no mention of this well in the Historic England Research Records (previously Pastscape), although using the Historic England map search, 'Church Pool' is shown some 100m to the north east of the church, at NY 39205 72006, just to the east of a private (foot?) suspension bridge on the north bank of the River Esk. The official easting and northing given for this well is: 339130 / 571970, so the inspector may have been looking in the wrong place for the well.
Does anyone have any more information about this well, please? Can you confirm its existence? If you have visited the site, do you have any photographs you can add? Thank you.
