Lundin Links submitted by Postman : Autumn Equinox sun rise 2018 (Vote or comment on this photo)
On the fairway of a Golf Club in Fife, three tall sculptural stones stand in a large rectangular arrangement. The NNE stone is missing. Possibly a four-poster or a stone row?

100 by 30 feet. The NNW stone is 17 feet tall, the SSW 15 feet, the SSE 14 feet tall, but 7 feet broad. Thom calculated two possible alignments: one SSW to Comrie Hill and minor S moonset, the other SSE to the minor S moonrise behind Bass Rock.

Graham writes: As you drive into Lundin Links in Fife you can catch a glimpse of these tall pillars from the road between houses on the edge of the golf course. They are on the Ladies Golf Course and further down the road is the entrance where you can ask permission to visit the site. Three tall sandstone pillars remain of the original four in the middle of the golf course.

Nick writes: Take the A915 east from Leven until you enter Lundin Links. A left turn into Woodielea Road takes you to the golf course. Park there and ask permission to view the stones (readily granted). They lie on the third fairway, about 600 metres in. These three pillars of coarse red sandstone are 3 corners of a rectangle roughly 30m by 10m.

The NNE stone is missing, although it lay by its stump in 1792, broken by treasure hunters. The NNW stone is 5.1m tall, the SSW 4.6m and the SSE is 4.2m by 2m broad. An eighteenth century excavation found cists, bones, and possibly a jet button (now lost). These stones appear to be an exaggerated form of four-poster, normally more common in Perthshire.

For more information see Canmore ID 32656 which includes details of a skull taken from a 'coffin built of loose slabs' in 1844.

Also see The Northern Antiquarian's entry for Lundin Links, Largo, Fife, which gives directions for finding this site, together with photographs, an image of the 1855 OS map showing the location of the stones, and a brief archaeology & history. TNA adds: "If you like your megaliths and you venture anywhere near here, make sure you come and visit these stones.  They’ll blow you away!  The only downfall we have is their location—stuck on the golf course; which, of course, means that meditating here is only possible between sunfall and sunrise (though I’ve usually found that’s the best time to be at stone circles anyway!), or perhaps in the pouring rain.  Whichever is your preference, these stones need looking at!" The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Lundin Links Standing Stones, Fife, Scotland, which includes directions for finding these stones ("you will need to ask for permission to visit" as they are on the golf course), a description, a drawing and a list of reference sources for more information.

Reminiscent of Llanfechell 1 stones in Anglesey - another tripartite arrangement?

I notice Graham helpfully mentions "the entrance where you can ask permission to visit the site" and wonder why? Do the golf club expect visitors to seek their permission?

Under Scotland's "Right to Roam" legislation (Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003) everyone is entitled to take a recreational walk on private open land. There is specific exemption for land set out “as a sports or playing field” or “for a particular recreational purpose”, and the law also specifies that on golf courses only the greens qualify for this exemption, the rest of the course is open to all.

If you wish to enjoy this freedom to visit the Lundin Links stones please bear in mind the legal obligations which apply:
1. Act responsibly (do not cause damage, do not litter, do not cause any disturbance, do not bring a dog except on a lead, do not leave gates open, do not interfere with any person or property, etc)
2. Access is for walkers only
3. Walk to the stones and back, do not wander about, do not settle anywhere
4. Do not walk on the greens
5. Do not interfere with any golfing.

If you adhere to the above then you do not require anyone's permission (though it is still polite to ask).
