Jceps70 visited on 21st Jan 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Just a few seconds walk from the main road. Site virtually at roadside. However don’t take a purposeful trip here. Recommend you to go Langley mere nature reserve about 2 miles up the road as your main trip. Well itself is not visible as it’s been covered. All that’s left is a slab depicting it’s the well and the metal rails. Feels kind of sad and neglected 😩

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire

This well is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 39043 which tells us: "St Helen's Well has been filled in and walled round with a wall 1.2 metres square. The enclosed portion is uncovered and about 2 metres below the level of the wall can be seen the rubbish which lies on the filled-in area. A wooden canopy has been built over the well, but it has been badly mutilated and torn down in parts. The whole is surrounded by an iron railing."

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this holy well - see their entry for St. Helen’s Well, Sefton, Lancashire, which gives directions for finding this well, together with an image of the 1850 OS map showing the location of the well, a description and local folklore. TNA also include historical accounts from 19th and early 20th century sources.
